Atelier Bloem - Half Moon
I love the concept for Atelier Bloem’s perfumes. Although based in USA, the brand is inspired by the Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam. It’s floating market of about 15 stalls that sell tourist souvenirs like clogs and tulip bulbs. I bought a nice cactus there and my mum bought some cheese, but they don’t sell too many fresh flowers anymore. Originally in 1862 (and even in Anne Frank’s time), it would have been a freshly scented floral extravaganza.
Now, I adore white florals, so got very excited at the mention of jasmine with honeysuckle. But ‘Half Moon’ is a very shy, meek and mild fragrance. It’s demure in its natural, virginal beauty, so only whispers its sillage. It could have been great if it found its voice. I don’t think it’s “half lit by the moon” I fear it’s half hidden in the shadow of the moon.
Atelier Bloem is a great homage to Holland, the Dutch are fantastic people, and at least the perfumes didn’t take olfactory inspiration from Edam, weed, the Red Light District or pickled herring.
