Erawan
‘Erawan’ is the sweet green scent of spring after an aromatic and woody roll in the hay.
It starts with the petitgrain, who waves his bitter-citrus fists in a herbal challenge against the clary sage. The clary sage reacts by trying to sweeten and soften the mood with its lavender, amber and leathery nuances. This herbaceous show-ponying is never resolved, as vetiver then pops-in his sharp lemongrass head, to see what’s going on, before Courmarinic Liatrix makes a dramatic entrance to steal the limelight. You’re probably wondering who/what this is, don’t worry, I’ve got you. ‘Liatrix’ is a purple plant with a rich, earthy, sweet honey floral scent otherwise known as ‘liatris’, ‘Deerstongue’ or ‘wild vanilla’. ‘Coumarin’ (on the other hand) is the compound in freshly mown hay. When used in a big quantities, it has a sweet gourmand almond-vanillic aroma. So, this why we get a strong hay note that dominates the heart of the scent. Dusita describes this hay note as “a liquid summer’s day.”
Joining the hay in the midway developments, is muguet (otherwise known as lily-of-the-valley). The muguet infuses the hay with its uplifting, dewy-green, sweetness with hints of lemon. So you’ve got lily-of-the-valley which is the personification of spring, working alongside “a liquid summer’s day” – I sense a suntan coming on just from spraying this scent against my skin!
The dry-down passes the microphone to lily-of-the-valley, as she is the final voice to be heard. She sings her swan song of soapy sweet nuances (deflecting her poisonous reality), before finally fading away…
‘Erawan’ is the grass-stained knees of illicit lovers. For me, the hay is the last straw, but I’m not going to bale on it.
