Santalum

Launched in 2003, ‘Santalum’ is a simplistic trio of notes (sandalwood, myrrh and spices) resulting in a tremendous blend of rich woody wonder.

The myrrh throbs and smokes with a woody, resinous, medicinal and bitter warmth. I’m reminded of the Christmas songs about myrrh;

“Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathe a life in gathering gloom
Sorrow, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone cold tomb”

Myrrh certainly receives a gloomy description, but when used in ‘Santalum’ it’s revived by blending warm spices and smooth sandalwood to offset its bitter, astringent-like clinical coldness. The myrrh is now browned whilst it warmly roasts against the skin. The exact spices used are not listed, but they are peppery, lively and toasted. The sandalwood (probably synthetic for ethical deforestation reasons) is soft, sensual and always reminds me of a cross between bamboo and waxy banana skin. This is a sandalwood dominant scent that’s not the creamy vanilla kind, this is much more simplistic but raw, with refined wood sincerity.

‘Santalum’ smells like pencil shavings and chestnuts roasting on an open fire. It’s big on wood - so if naturalistic, freshly cut wood isn’t your preference, then the additional smoky, spicy elements won’t be enough to tempt you.

£225 for 100ml and is the best smoky, spicy, wood scent that leans masculine. It’s for serious men who like to brood and smoulder whilst pondering life.
